Undercurrents is a memoir by Martha Manning, Ph.D., who is a clinical psychologist and was a former professor of psychology at George Mason University.Martha Manning's book raised many different opinions and thoughts to mind. She is so honest that her descent into such a haunting depression engages you in a whole new dimension of thought.
Many books try and prove that depression is an illness worth looking at and worrying about. But this book does it. It really does. The author expresses the experience we call depression so vividly and passionately that a thousand other thoughts run through your mind at the same time. She not only is able to illustrate her melancholy with amazing words, but also seems to perceive the endless reactions that happen around her as she falls through the endless well of misery and pulls herself back up again. This book is very dramatic and painfully true, as you will see if you ever read it.
But looking through all that you'd put it down that it's definitely an utterly depressing memoir but it isn't. She reflects a countless number of her experiences and thoughts with humor. In one year she is contains in a single book and one hundred and ninety seven pages both tears of confusion and tears of laughter.

Having dealt with depression, I found this book (true story) very insightful. Those who haven't dealth with it personally, or those who have someone going through depression should really read this book. It's inside the mind of an older women with severe depression. Interesting, informative, and truthful. A must read!
This book was difficult to read but I recognized so much of my own experience in Dr Manning's writing. She gives and incredible insight into the suffering of depression. I feel like giving this book to all my family members and friends to read so that I can stop hearing annoying "just snap out of it" type of advices.
It is impossible to appreciate what suffering from manic depression means unless you've been there, a fact that you can see when reading some of the reviews posted here.
This book is wonderful! I can not recommend it enough. I read it in two days and felt like it gave an accurate 'face' to depression. It also helps to educate about modern day ECT, which is not the scary monster in the corner some think it is. Highly recommend!
This book was helpful, it helped me understand what depression is like and why a person would consider death versus life.
A friend with depression recommended this book to me last summer, since I have also struggled mightily with major depression since being treated for cancer in 2010. I've read so many books on this topic in the last few years, some of which were very helpful (and some, not so much.) But Martha Manning's book was the first (and so far only) book about depression that seemed real to me. Like I could have written some of those passages myself. It was eerie, but so liberating, to read such an articulate account of what it's like to suffer from crippling depression. I've loaned (given, is more like it) my first two copies to other people, and have just ordered my third copy. I'm so thankful to Dr. Manning for writing this book. I know it was written several years ago, but this is the first book I recommend to anyone with depression or who knows someone who suffers from it.
Reading this book, I felt for the first time since my first major depressive episode in 2005 that someone actually understands what I have gone through. Manning delivers a rivoting description of what depression really is, "a room in hell with only your name on the door," and what it does to a person. Manning's own experience with depression was so severe that she eventually consented to ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) treatments in order to find relief from her excruciating condition. She provides a unique viewpoint, being both a depression sufferer and a mental health professional, giving insight that would be lost were she solely one or the other. This book is really a must-read for anyone who suffers from depression or has a family member or close friend who suffers from it, as well as counseling students.
This book is luminous, harrowing, stark, honest and breathtaking. Dr. Manning's elegant memoir depicts her own descent into spiraling depression. She tells her story with unflinching candor, intelligent prose and surprising humor. Her struggle and the eventual triumph over her despair are inspiring. Readers who have ever encountered the inexplicable darkness of depression will find hope and validation in this beautifully written, deeply personal tale.
