Good People Robert Lopez Books
This book is unlike anything I've ever read. It's a whole new way of seeing people, stories, the world. I loved it. It startled me with the original phrasing, the intense stories, the almost obsessive thought patterns. I loved it. Everyone should read it. It feels good to get away from traditional, boring, standard fiction and to wake up your mind with something new and original.Tags : Amazon.com: Good People (9781942658023): Robert Lopez: Books,Robert Lopez,Good People,Bellevue Literary Press,1942658028,Humorous - Black Humor,Black humor,Black humor.,Black humor;Fiction.,Conduct of life;Fiction.,Short stories, American - 21st century,FICTION Hispanic & Latino,FICTION Humorous Black Humor,FICTION Literary,FICTION Short Stories (single author),Fiction,Fiction - General,Fiction-Short Stories (single author),GENERAL,General Adult,HISPANIC AMERICAN NOVEL AND SHORT STORY,Short Stories (single author),Short stories,United States
Good People Robert Lopez Books Reviews
This may just be Lopez's best book yet, and if you're familiar with his work, you know that's saying something. (If you're not, I envy you. Check out Kamby Bolongo Mean River, Part of the World, and Asunder next). The stories in Good People will make you laugh, think, feel alive. And if you care about language, you'll likely read most of them more than once.
Robert Lopez’s stories are dark and hilarious and strange and familiar, tapping into the collective unconscious in ways that are fresh and startling and uncannily precise. His sentences reveal everything and nothing. His narrators are us, in all our confused and self-obsessed and hopeful and hopeless glory. These are stories that will stay lodged in your brain long after you’ve read them, like earworms you can’t seem to shake loose. They’re terrific. Read them.
Robert Lopez is a listener-in, a looker-inside-of the hearts and heads and mouths of people, good or bad or ugly, who inhabit a world where they are with their time here simply doing their best to figure things—the world, themselves in the world—out. Lopez is a writer like no other who takes the staleness that the language of everyday speech is and he breaks it and invigorates it into a language with a musicality all his own. These stories are songs, are skin, are rivers, they are iterations of saying where the saying is the thing itself. What Lopez says in his saying is what most of us are afraid to say even though we know that what he is saying happens to be true.
Talk about in medias res Robert Lopez drops us right into the middle of some of his alienated characters’ darkest moments…and we can’t help but read on. “Someone’s coat is in the middle of the floor, which indicates the owner is probably dead by now.” Huh? What follows in the story, “The Human Cost,” is a 28-sentence paragraph told in the first-person plural point of view. Who is our narrator? Who is he (or she) speaking for in the we? Why are they at crime scenes four or five times a week? And why must the coat’s owner be dead? Looking for the answers is half the fun of the reading (and the re-reading) of these stories.
In “The Sky Was Everywhere Like Water,” the narrator begins, “There’s a woman with her lip split open and it’s not my fault.” The 5-page paragraph, stream-of-consciousness narrative that follows takes us closer to an understanding of what happened, though the narrator’s state of mind at the time—both during the splitting of the lip and the telling of the story—is questionable to say the least. These stories remind me stylistically of Denis Johnson’s Jesus’ Son in the very best way. With deceptive simplicity, Lopez crafts complex characters and trusts his reader to intuit what isn’t on the page. It is a book that bears multiple reads.
This is a great book if you love short stories which are laughed out loud funny with a touch of sadness.
Really enjoy this writers style. Very enjoyable
I pre-ordered two dozen of Robert’s Good People just so I could pass them out to some of my friends who had not had the dark pleasure of reading Robert’s work. Having read all of Robert’s prior works and having a pretty good idea of what to expect I had a good laugh just from the title alone. Good People!? I am not so sure the people in Robert’s stories would qualify as being “good” in the conventional sense but Robert’s writing certainly is good and then some.
Dark and hilariously absurd – Robert’s latest effort did not disappoint. Sit down, pour yourself a dram of a fine 21-year old single malt Scotch and get ready to appreciate some of the wittiest writing of our generation.
